The Schusterman Visting Artist Program, The Brown University Creative Arts Council, the Office of Multi-Cultural Affairs at RISD, and Brown-RISD Hillel is planning an exciting community collaboration to bring the accomplished Israeli animator and illustrator, David Polonsky, to Providence for a three month artist-in-residency project from February 9th – May 1st 2009.
Polonsky has contributed illustrations for every major daily newspaper and magazine in Israel, and has won several awards for his illustrations for children’s books. He just received Israel’s Academy Award for best art direction for Waltz with Bashir, which is about film director, Ari Folman’s, attempt to reconcile his memory of the 1982 Lebanon war. A full-length animated documentary, Waltz with Bashir was nominated for the Palme d’Or, the top prize at the Cannes film festival, earlier this year and had its American premiere at the New York Film Festival in September. Waltz with Bashir will have its commercial release in the United States in December. It is also Israel’s nominee to Hollywood’s Academy Awards this February in the foreign language category.
